It is necessary under IMO and SOLAS requirements. The annual survey includes the signal frequency range tests and signal power measurement. Some testers can measure frequency hop time. Before 1999 one could test SART using marine-vehicle radar but now to turn on SART with no distress situation is strictly prohibited.
